Christmas Shipping Deadlines and Your Cut-Off

When is the last day to ship for Christmas 2026?

For Christmas 2026, carriers’ recommended last dates for domestic parcels run from Thursday 10 December (Canada Post Regular Parcel) to Wednesday 23 December (overnight services) and Thursday 24 December (FedEx SameDay). Most international services close earlier, though UPS Worldwide Express and FedEx International Priority to Canada run to 23 December. Subtract handling days and a buffer: that’s your order-by date.

Note: Every date here was read at the carrier’s page on 21 October 2026. Several carriers say their dates are subject to change: recheck the linked page before you publish yours.

Christmas Day 2026 is Friday 25 December, but not every carrier aims for it. USPS gives “recommended send-by dates for expected delivery before December 25”. UPS and FedEx give dates for delivery by Thursday 24 December. Australia Post’s dates are to get parcels there “in time for Christmas Day”; Royal Mail and Canada Post give dates for Christmas without naming a delivery day.

What are the US deadlines for USPS, UPS and FedEx?

USPS’s recommended dates within the US run from 17 to 19 December, for delivery before 25 December; UPS’s and FedEx’s from 15 to 24 December, for delivery by 24 December. UPS Ground has no single date.

USPS says the actual delivery date may vary with origin, destination, Post Office acceptance time and other conditions. UPS says “Shipments to certain destinations may require an earlier ship date.” FedEx’s Ground dates assume “a regular scheduled pickup or drop off of shipments at a staffed FedEx location”, and its international dates “do not take into account time requirements for customs”.

What are Royal Mail’s last posting dates for Christmas 2026?

Royal Mail’s last posting dates for Christmas 2026 within the UK run from Friday 18 December (2nd Class) to Wednesday 23 December (Special Delivery Guaranteed). As of 21 October 2026, Royal Mail has published no international Christmas dates.

For parcels leaving the UK, Royal Mail’s page and PDFs give no Christmas dates and point to its Country Guides and to the Parcelforce Worldwide directory instead, so a list of “Royal Mail international last posting dates 2026” did not come from Royal Mail’s Christmas page or its PDFs (checked 21 October 2026).

What are Canada Post’s holiday deadlines?

Canada Post’s 2026 dates for packages within Canada run from Thursday 10 December (Regular Parcel, national) to Wednesday 23 December (Priority), and to the USA from 11 to 17 December. They are “between major urban centres and are dependent on origin and destination”.

Important: Canada Post’s holiday table still lists France and Germany, but its service alerts suspend parcel acceptance to Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Luxembourg and Portugal “until further notice”, citing new EU customs requirements for low-value shipments (posted 7 July 2026, checked 21 October 2026). We give no date for those nine. More on the EU change: the EU’s new customs duty and Shopify.

What are Australia Post’s Christmas cut-off dates?

Australia Post’s 2026 Parcel Post dates between metro areas run from Monday 14 December (some Northern Territory lanes) to Tuesday 22 December (within the same state), and Express Post closes on 22 or 23 December. Overseas, Economy Air to the rest of the world closes on Tuesday 24 November.

Over-the-counter Parcel Post must be lodged by 2.30 pm; allow extra time outside metro areas. For overseas items from South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory, add 2 business days for Express and 5 for Standard and Economy.

How do I set my own order-by date?

Your order-by date is the carrier’s last ship date, minus a buffer you choose, minus the working days you need to pick, pack and hand the parcel over. Shopify’s advice on fulfilment time: “Know the cut-off time of your main shipping carrier and plan around these times” (Shopify, checked 21 October 2026).

Step What to enter
1. Carrier date The date for your service and lane, from the tables above
2. Last handover day That date, or your last working day before it: a Saturday 19 December date (USPS Priority Mail Express, Royal Mail Tracked 48) helps only if you post on Saturdays
3. Buffer Working days held back for a missed pickup; subtract them
4. Handling time Working days from order to handover; subtract them
5. Order-by date The day left, at your normal daily order cut-off

Hypothetical example: suppose a store ships within the Lower 48 by USPS Priority Mail, needs two working days to hand an order over, and keeps one working day as a buffer. USPS’s date is Friday 18 December. The buffer moves the last handover to Thursday 17 December, and two handling days (Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17) make the order-by date Tuesday 15 December.

On Thursday 24 December UPS picks up only Air and International Air packages: its year-end schedule says if prearranged by Friday 18 December, and its 2026 operations calendar adds that UPS On-Call Pickup is available for them. FedEx runs “Modified service” that day, including “Modified Ground pickups”. UPS and FedEx are both closed on Friday 25 December. The other carriers’ date pages don’t state their 24–26 December hours: check locally.

Which Christmas shipping dates online are out of date?

Until a carrier posts its new table, its page can still show last year’s dates, as Royal Mail’s, UPS’s and Australia Post’s did in 2026, and copies of those tables stay online. Test the weekday: if it doesn’t match the 2026 calendar, the table is old.

  • Royal Mail. On 30 September 2026 the archived copy of its page still showed 2025: 2nd Class Wednesday 17 December, 1st Class Saturday 20 December. In 2026, 17 December is a Thursday and 20 December a Sunday.
  • UPS. UPS reuses the same file name and asset ID for this PDF each year, and its 2 July 2026 archived copy is the 2025 schedule, with 3 Day Select on Dec. 19, a Saturday in 2026. Neither year’s PDF gives a UPS Ground date.
  • Canada Post. The 2025 table had National Priority on December 20 (2026: December 23).
  • Australia Post. In June 2026 its page still showed 2025’s matrix, with NSW to NSW on “Mon 22/12”. 22 December 2026 is a Tuesday.

How do I show the order-by date on Shopify?

The simplest place for an order-by date is your theme’s announcement bar, which Shopify suggests for “any shipping delays”. If your theme has a built-in announcement bar, Shopify’s steps are (checked 21 October 2026; some themes call it Announcement banner, and others need an app):

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store.
  2. Click Edit theme next to your theme.
  3. In the Announcement bar section, click Add Announcement.
  4. In the Text field, enter your date; with the hypothetical above, “Order by Tuesday 15 December for delivery before Christmas in the Lower 48”. Add a Link to your shipping page.
  5. Click Save.

If you’ve moved your theme into Canvas, Shopify’s new design surface rolling out to existing stores since 1 October 2026, these theme-editor steps may not match; a theme you haven’t moved stays in the current theme editor (Shopify changelog).

A theme has one announcement bar section with up to 12 blocks, so you can add one per destination, and hide each with its eye icon when its date passes. To plan it ahead: scheduling theme changes on Shopify.

At checkout, a shipping option’s Name and its optional Add delivery details text are shown to customers (Settings → Shipping and delivery; shipping rates). Shopify doesn’t describe using them for a holiday cut-off; putting the date there is our suggestion. Test that your shipping app’s live rates appear too (why a shipping app’s rates may not show at checkout).

With manual estimated delivery dates (Settings → Shipping and delivery → Estimated delivery dates, then Manual), Shopify counts business days as Monday to Friday, with a 12 pm cutoff in the shipping origin’s time zone (manual delivery dates). The same page says both that holidays are included in the calculation and that they don’t count as fulfilment time, so don’t rely on it to skip 25 December.

What these dates don’t cover

  • Guarantees. For items mailed from 2 November 2026 to 10 January 2027, Canada Post honours late-delivery claims on Priority, Xpresspost and Expedited Parcel within Canada only if the item is two or more business days late (peak season notice). UPS says “all Service Guarantees are subject to change”.
  • DHL Express. DHL publishes demand surcharges for 1 October 2026 to 5 February 2027, but we found no Christmas ship-by dates (checked 21 October 2026).
  • Other lanes. Parcelforce’s international services, other UPS and FedEx destinations (use UPS’s Calculate Time and Cost at ups.com/ctc and FedEx’s rate tool), and lanes outside the metro areas Canada Post and Australia Post list.

Next, work out the order-by date for your main service and lane, and put it in your announcement bar. For the rest of your pre-season list, see what changed on Shopify before Black Friday.
