Schedule Black Friday Theme Changes on Shopify
How do I schedule Black Friday theme changes on Shopify?
On Shopify, schedule Black Friday changes with Rollouts, under Markets → Rollouts. An Event rollout switches on your sale theme, checkout and accounts configuration, sale-price catalogues and, since 2 October 2026, discounts at a start time in your store’s time zone, then rolls them back at its end. Rollouts need the Basic plan or higher.
Note: The Shopify settings, labels and plan rules on this page were checked against Shopify’s help documentation on 6 October 2026. Shopify’s new admin look has been rolling out gradually since 15 September 2026 (changelog) and the Rollouts set-up was redesigned on 22 September 2026 (changelog), so your screens may differ.
By our count, Black Friday is Friday 27 November 2026 and Cyber Monday is 30 November: Shopify defines them as the Friday and the Monday after US Thanksgiving, and the US Office of Personnel Management lists Thanksgiving 2026 on Thursday 26 November.
If you’ve read that only Plus stores can schedule a theme: Shopify’s Launchpad app is still listed as Plus-only (App Store), but Rollouts, launched on 31 March 2026 (changelog), is available on the Basic plan or higher (requirements).
What can a rollout change, and what switches back?
A Shopify rollout can change four things: your main theme (edited or replaced), your checkout and accounts configuration, catalogues (set to Active or Draft) and discounts (activated or deactivated) (types of rollouts and changes). Product publishing, the store password and shipping rates aren’t among them, and Shopify’s Admin API lists no other change type (shopify.dev).
A Launch, the default type, applies its changes permanently, and you can’t revert them after it ends. Adding an end date turns it into an Event (creating a rollout), which publishes changes for a set period and is Shopify’s suggestion for a seasonal sale (types).
One rollout takes one theme change, one checkout and accounts change, one or more catalogue changes and, since 2 October 2026 (changelog), one discount change covering up to 250 discounts (requirements).
What reverts when the Event ends
At its end date and time, an Event rolls back its changes automatically, and its traffic returns to the published resource, such as your published theme, or to any remaining active rollout (managing rollouts).
Theme-editor changes made for the rollout apply only to it, and parts you don’t customise there keep syncing with your published theme (creating a rollout). Catalogue price edits apply whenever the catalogue is active, and a catalogue status you set by hand during the rollout is the one it keeps when an Event ends (catalogues).
A discount is active for a visitor when its own active dates apply, or when an active rollout that activates it applies to that visitor (requirements). By that rule, a discount whose own dates already apply is live before the Event starts, and one whose dates run past the Event keeps running after it ends or is rolled back. So give each sale discount its own Active dates for the sale too.
How do I set up the Black Friday Event?
To schedule a Black Friday theme on Shopify, prepare the theme, catalogue and discounts, then create an Event rollout, add each change, show it to all eligible visitors and set its start and end. The steps follow Shopify’s help on creating a rollout (checked 6 October 2026).
Before you start
- Check your store’s time zone. Rollout times use the one in Settings → General (creating a rollout), set in the Time zone list under Store defaults (business settings), and discount dates follow it too (discounts FAQ). Shopify doesn’t say whether changing it later moves a scheduled rollout (checked 6 October 2026), so set it first.
- A replacement theme must already be in your online store, and a replacement checkout configuration and the discounts must already exist (creating a rollout).
- The store owner and administrators can create rollouts. Other staff need a Store role with the Markets → Rollouts permission plus the permission for each change (requirements).
Create the Event
- From your Shopify admin, go to Markets → Rollouts and click Create rollout.
- In the Name section, name the rollout.
- In the rollout type menu, select Event.
- In the Changes section, click Add changes. If you’ll edit your main theme, click Save to save the rollout before you choose Edit theme.
- Choose the change, then click Apply:
- Online store: under Prepare changes to your current theme, click Edit theme, make the sale edits in the theme editor and click Save, or under Replace the current theme, select your sale theme.
- Checkout & accounts: in the Replace the current configuration section, select your sale configuration.
- Catalogs: select Set to active for a sale-price catalogue.
- Discounts: select each discount and set it to activated for the customers in your rollout.
- Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each further change.
- In the Audience section, under Traffic allocation, click All eligible visitors and set the slider or percentage to 100%. Eligibility shows the markets your changes determine.
- In the Scheduling section, click Start date, select when the sale starts, such as midnight at the start of 27 November 2026, and click Done. For an Event, the date fields read Event runs from.
- Click Set end date, select when the sale ends, such as the end of 30 November 2026, and click Done.
- Read the description of what happens when the rollout ends.
- If Resolve rollout conflicts appears, fix the conflict before saving; Review rollout conflicts is only a warning.
- Click Save. The rollout shows Scheduled until it becomes Active (managing rollouts).
Edit your main theme for the sale
Shopify lets you edit only your main theme in a rollout, and only after the rollout is saved (creating a rollout). To change the sale edits later:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store.
- On your main theme, click Edit theme.
- In the theme editor’s menu bar, click the theme name and select the rollout.
- Make the changes, such as sale banners, and click Save (managing rollouts).
If the sale has to stop early
On an active rollout, click Pause and later Resume, or click End, choose Roll back changes or Apply changes, and click End again (managing rollouts). Applying keeps the changes: a discount the rollout activated stays active and loses its end date. Rolling back doesn’t stop a discount whose own dates still apply: to end it early, change its own End date and End time. You can’t archive or delete an active rollout.
Where do I schedule what a rollout can’t?
Shopify’s Rollouts cover the theme, checkout, catalogue prices and discounts. For the rest of a sale, use a discount’s own dates, Shopify Flow for product publishing, or do it by hand: Shopify documents no schedule for the store password, shipping rates or a product’s own price fields (checked 6 October 2026).
| What you want to change | Where Shopify schedules it | Plan | Switches back by itself? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sale theme, or banners and section text in your current theme | Event rollout, Online store change | Basic or higher | Yes, at the Event’s end |
| Checkout and accounts configuration | Event rollout, Checkout & accounts change | Basic or higher | Yes; online store only, not headless checkouts |
| Discounts | The discount’s own Active dates, or a discount change in the rollout | Rollouts: Basic or higher | Own dates: at its End date and End time, or never without one. In an Event: the rollout’s activation ends with it, and its own dates still apply |
| Sale prices for a market | A catalogue of sale prices, set to active by the Event | Catalogues: every plan. Rollouts: Basic or higher; Shopify’s help states no other plan rule, apart from a cap on active B2B catalogues (checked 6 October 2026) | Yes; POS and product feeds follow on their next sync |
| A product’s own Price and Compare-at price | No schedule documented; the bulk editor and CSV files edit many at once | — | No |
| Publishing products to a sales channel | Shopify Flow’s Scheduled time trigger, with Shopify’s templates | Flow: Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus | No: each of Shopify’s templates goes one way, so reversing one takes another workflow (our reasoning) |
| Store password (private mode) | No schedule documented | — | — |
| Shipping rates and free-shipping thresholds | Rates: no schedule documented. A free shipping discount with its own Active dates and a minimum purchase amount | — | The discount: at its end date, if you set one |

Sale prices: prepare them in a catalogue
Shopify’s documented way to schedule a price change is to prepare it in a catalogue and let a rollout set that catalogue to active (catalogues).
- Go to Markets → Catalogs and click Create catalog.
- Enter a Title and select Draft. Active would start using it immediately.
- Click Add a market and choose the sale’s market. A catalogue change shows to no one until the catalogue is assigned to a market.
- Under Pricing, select the catalogue’s currency in Set prices in, then enter a percentage in Price adjustment (by default it applies to compare-at prices too, unless you turn off Include compare-at price), or set a Price per item under Products.
- Click Save, then add the catalogue to your Event with Catalogs → Set to active.
At 100% of visitors, depending on its markets and channels, the change also reaches checkout, Shopify POS and your Google & YouTube product feeds. Below 100% it applies only to your online store, and Shopify warns that Google and Meta can delist products or suspend an account over mismatched offers; the first way it lists to reduce that risk is a traffic allocation of 100% (audience reach). When the Event ends, Shopify POS and product feeds catch up only on their next sync (requirements).
Shopify doesn’t say what a market shows when its only catalogue returns to Draft at an Event’s end (checked 6 October 2026), so look at that market’s storefront as soon as the Event ends.
A discount instead of new prices shows its saving crossed out at checkout, but for crossed-out prices on product and collection pages, Shopify says you need a third-party discount app or a Shopify Partner (sale prices).
Publishing products at a set time
Shopify’s help shows no schedule in a product’s Publishing section (product availability). Shopify Flow, free on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans, has a Scheduled time trigger that starts a workflow at a date and time you set, in your store’s time zone unless you pick another (Scheduled time). Its templates include “Publish products with a certain tag in the future” and “Schedule products to be removed from Online Store at the specified date and time”. Shopify documents no Flow workflow that changes prices on a schedule (checked 6 October 2026).
The store password and shipping rates
With no documented schedule for private mode (checked 6 October 2026), switch it by hand: in the Online Store page’s access menu, click Private, select Public and click Update, or Launch store the first time (restrict access). For a sale-only free-shipping threshold, a free shipping discount has its own active dates and a minimum purchase amount: Start date, Start time and Minimum purchase requirements on an automatic discount, Minimum requirements on a code (free shipping discounts).
When won’t a rollout work?
A Shopify rollout can’t be applied to a vintage theme, can’t change Liquid templates and can’t edit a theme you edited in Canvas (Canvas help), and below 100% of visitors it reaches only your online store (requirements). Make those changes by hand, and keep a sale Event at 100% of visitors.
Vintage themes are those not upgraded to Online Store 2.0; Liquid templates are the template files ending in .liquid.
Whether a rollout can swap in a Canvas-edited theme, Shopify’s pages disagree: its 1 October 2026 launch note says Canvas doesn’t support rollouts at launch, and its Canvas help says it can (checked 6 October 2026).
Rollouts that change the same resource share its visitors, which can reduce how many see your changes (managing rollouts).
A discount or catalogue can be in only one unended rollout at a time, and combination settings still apply to a discount in a rollout (requirements). Unended includes Draft (types of rollouts and changes), so a forgotten draft rollout holding your sale discount keeps it out of the Event.
Important: While any unended rollout has main-theme customisations, you can’t publish a new main theme without first archiving every unended rollout, which permanently deletes their theme customisations (creating a rollout). If your Event changes your theme or checkout, don’t publish another theme or checkout configuration until it has ended: Shopify requires the other unended rollouts to be archived first (managing rollouts).
What should I do before the sale?
Set up the Black Friday Event in Shopify now, while there is time to fix a conflict, and confirm it shows Scheduled.
- In Settings → General, confirm the Time zone.
- Add the sale theme to your online store, or plan your main-theme edits. Create the discounts with Active dates for the sale only, and any sale catalogue as Draft.
- Create the Event at 100% of visitors, read what happens when it ends, and click Save.
- List what you’ll do by hand: the store password, shipping rates, Liquid templates.
- If the Event changes your theme or checkout, publish no other theme or checkout configuration until it shows Ended.
- When the sale starts, check that the rollout shows Active.
