Google Shopping Product Ratings for Shopify

How do product ratings get into Google Shopping?

Star ratings on Shopping ads need Google’s Product Ratings programme: at least 50 product reviews, a product reviews data source in Merchant Center or an aggregator that submits one for you, and a few weeks for onboarding. Free listings can show aggregated reviews without it. A Shopify review app can generate the data source, as a feed Google fetches.

Note: The Google Merchant Center pages cited in this guide were checked on 27 October 2026. Google changes its programmes and menus, so check them again before you apply.

Product ratings are the stars, from 1 to 5, and the number of reviews that Google shows beside a product in Shopping ads and free product listings (Google Merchant Center Help: Product Ratings basics). Google combines reviews from several kinds of sources for each product, so the stars a shopper sees aren’t only yours. On free listings those combined reviews can appear whether or not you join the programme, though joining “may increase the likelihood” that reviews are matched to your listings (Google Merchant Center Help: Product Ratings eligibility). They are separate from the stars in ordinary search results, which come from structured data on your product pages and are a different system: see why Shopify stars don’t show in Google.

What does Google’s Product Ratings programme need?

Google’s Product Ratings programme needs at least 50 reviews across all your products, a reviews data source uploaded at least once a month, product URLs on the domain registered in your Merchant Center account, and a unique identifier for each product. It is open where Shopping ads and free product listings are available.

Requirement What Google says
Number of reviews “You must have a minimum of 50 reviews across all of your products.”
How often “Your product review data source must be uploaded at least once a month”, with updated reviews
Domain “The domains in the <product_url> of the review data source must match the registered domain” in Merchant Center
Product identifiers “Unique product identifiers like GTIN, or Brand + MPN”
Where “Countries where Shopping ads and free product listings are available”

Google’s policies add rules about which reviews you send (Google Merchant Center Help: Product Ratings policies):

  • Share every product review, “including low-star reviews, unless specifically instructed otherwise”, and don’t delete old reviews from the feed.
  • Reviews obtained with incentives, such as discounts, can show, but the incentive “cannot be dependent on the sentiment of the review”, and the feed has to mark each one as incentivised.
  • Google removes reviews it believes have conflicts of interest, such as reviews written by employees.

How does a product reviews feed work?

A product reviews feed is an XML file of your reviews in Google’s format that Merchant Center reads on a schedule. You apply to the programme, then add the feed in Merchant Center as a product reviews data source, and Google reviews it before your ratings go live.

  1. Check you have at least 50 product reviews, then apply with Google’s Product Ratings Interest Form. A Google agent reviews the application and enables your account for the programme.
  2. Get the feed: “a validated product reviews XML file”, with a unique product identifier for each product.
  3. In Merchant Center, add it as a product reviews data source. Google accepts a scheduled fetch from a URL, SFTP or Google Cloud Storage, a file upload, or its Merchant API.
  4. Keep it current: send the full data source at least once a month.

Product ratings, store ratings and Google Customer Reviews: what’s the difference?

Product ratings are reviews of individual products, shown on Google’s product listings. Reviews of your business as a whole are a separate Google programme, store ratings. Google Customer Reviews is Google’s own free way to collect reviews, for merchants who don’t already gather them (Google Merchant Center Help: Product Ratings basics).

What it rates Where reviews come from
Product ratings Each product Your product reviews data source, review aggregators, review sites and Google users
Store ratings Your business A separate Google programme
Google Customer Reviews Your store’s customers’ reviews, collected by Google Google’s own free programme for collecting reviews

Google lists three ways to join Product Ratings: through a supported reviews aggregator that submits your reviews for you; directly, by signing up and submitting reviews in Merchant Center, which needs a linked, verified business website; or by collecting reviews with Google Customer Reviews if you don’t already gather them.

A review app that gives you a product reviews feed covers product ratings only. It doesn’t put your store’s rating into Google.

What if your store isn’t on your main domain?

Google matches the product URLs in your reviews feed against the domain registered in your Merchant Center account, so they must be the same domain: “The domains in the <product_url> of the review data source must match the registered domain.” The feed’s product links should use the domain your Merchant Center account is registered with.

  • If you sell on a custom domain and Merchant Center uses it, the feed’s product links need that custom domain, not the myshopify.com address.
  • If you change your store’s primary domain, check the feed and Merchant Center agree before Google’s next fetch.

How long does it take?

After you first submit your reviews data source, Google says it “can take 2-4 weeks for your reviews to go live” (Google Merchant Center Help: upload a product reviews data source). Before that, the Interest Form has to be reviewed and your account enabled, and you need the 50 reviews first.

Once you’re live, the ratings follow your monthly uploads: Google needs the data source at least once a month to keep you eligible. A store with fewer than 50 reviews has nothing to send yet; collecting them comes first: get more product reviews.

How do you send reviews to Google Shopping with an app?

A review app that supports Google Shopping can give you the feed as a web address to paste into Merchant Center, so the reviews you collect go to Google on Merchant Center’s schedule. Check what the app puts in the feed, and that its product links use your registered domain.

Avis Product Reviews, which we build, has a Google Shopping reviews feed under Integrations: switch it on, copy the Feed URL and add it in Merchant Center as a product reviews data source. It’s free in Avis. The feed holds every published product review with text, up to the newest 450,000; reviews you added yourself, staff reviews and store reviews stay out, and an imported review goes in only when Avis matched it to one of your orders or you verified it by hand. Google still reviews the feed and decides whether to accept it.

Avis builds the feed from your Shopify catalogue. Its product links use your store’s primary domain; GTINs come from your variants’ barcodes, SKUs go in as both SKUs and MPNs, and your product’s vendor goes in as the brand. So before you apply, fill in barcodes and vendors in Shopify for the products you want rated, and check your primary domain is the one registered in Merchant Center.

Tip: Avis Product Reviews, which collects and imports Shopify reviews, gives you the feed in a few clicks: send reviews to Google Shopping with Avis.

Whatever app you use, the order of work is the same: collect 50 honest reviews, apply to the programme, add the feed once, and keep it running every month.

Avis Product Reviews App

Avis Product Reviews is a Shopify app that collects photo and video reviews after each order and imports your reviews from another review app, with the photos its file links to. Labels tell shoppers which reviews were matched to an order, rewarded or added by the store, and Avis never hides a review because of its rating.
