How to Add Product Reviews to Shopify

Avis

Does Shopify have built-in product reviews?

No. Shopify retired its own Product Reviews app in May 2024, and the product reviews Shopify collects from buyers in the Shop app are shown in the Shop app, not on your online store, unless a supported partner review app displays them there. To show reviews on your own product pages, you need a review app.

Note: The Shopify and Google pages cited in this guide were checked on 14 October 2026.

Here is what each part of Shopify does for reviews today:

Option Where reviews show What you need
Shop product reviews On the product’s page in the Shop app Nothing: Shop asks your buyers itself
Shop reviews on your store Your product pages, with a Verified by Shop badge One of the partner review apps Shopify lists
Your theme’s rating display Stars on product pages and product cards An app that fills Shopify’s standard rating fields
A review app Your product pages, plus request emails, imports and review data for Google An app from the Shopify App Store

What happened to Shopify’s Product Reviews app?

Shopify’s own Product Reviews app was removed from the App Store in September 2023 and switched off on 6 May 2024, when merchants lost access to its reviews in the admin and its reviews stopped showing on stores.

The dates come from Shopify. Its Community team said in September 2023 that the app had been delisted on 5 September (Shopify Community). Shopify’s help page in late May 2024 said the app was no longer available to install from 6 May, that existing reviews were gone from the admin and the store, and that merchants needed to move to another review app (Shopify Help Center, archived 28 May 2024). Today the app’s App Store page says it is not currently available (Shopify App Store), and that help page address now describes Shop product reviews instead.

If you exported your reviews from it before then, the CSV file can still go into another review app: see switch review apps without losing reviews.

What do Shop product reviews do?

Shop product reviews are reviews Shopify collects from your buyers inside the Shop app. After an order is delivered, Shop asks the customer for a review of what they bought, and the reviews show on that product’s page in the Shop app, not on your online store.

Shopify’s help page on Shop product reviews sets out how it works (Shopify Help Center: Shop product reviews):

  • Who can review. Customers who bought from you, through the Shop app or your online store.
  • When they’re asked. After delivery, by a push or in-app notification on their device.
  • What they leave. A rating from 1 to 5 stars and an optional comment of up to 1,000 characters.
  • Where it shows. Publicly, with the average rating, on the product’s page in the Shop app.

Reaching your own store takes a partner app. Shopify lists five partner review apps that sync with Shop: reviews Shop collects are shared with them and can show on your store with a Verified by Shop badge you can’t remove, and their reviews can show in Shop. A partner app’s review appears in Shop only if it is linked to a customer, an order and a product, and reviews moved between apps or uploaded with a CSV file aren’t eligible (Shopify Help Center: syncing Shop product reviews with partner apps). If reviews inside the Shop app matter to your sales, start your choice of app with that list.

What does your theme already support?

Your theme may already show star ratings, but it can’t collect reviews. Shopify defines standard rating fields that review apps fill in and themes read, so stars appear in your theme once an app writes them.

  • The rating fields. reviews.rating holds a product’s average and reviews.rating_count its number of ratings. Shopify asks rating apps to keep them up to date and themes that display ratings to read them (shopify.dev: standard metafield definitions).
  • Where themes use them. Shopify’s free Dawn theme, for example, has a Product rating block for the product page and a Product rating option on product cards, each noting that an app is required for ratings (Dawn’s settings).
  • App blocks. Review apps built for current themes add their widgets as app blocks and app embeds, and Shopify marks that app support as unavailable on vintage themes (Shopify Help Center: theme architecture versions). On an older theme, check with the app before you install.
  • Product data for Google. Shopify’s Dawn and Horizon themes also print structured data about each product, and Shopify’s example of it has a price and no rating. The rating comes from your review app, which is explained in why stars don’t show in Google.

A text or testimonials section in your theme can hold quotes you type yourself. It collects nothing and adds no rating.

What should a review app do for you?

A review app should ask customers for reviews at the right moment, show them on your product pages with labels that say where each one came from, let you take your reviews with you, and give Google review data it can read.

Check Why it matters
Asks by email after the order arrives, with a reminder or two A request after delivery reaches customers who have used the product; Shop itself asks then
Shows photos and videos Shoppers can see the product in other buyers’ hands
Labels verified buyers, rewarded reviews and reviews you added Shoppers can tell them apart, and Google’s guidelines rule out incentivised reviews that aren’t clearly disclosed
Never hides a review because of its rating Shoppers can trust that the critical reviews are there too
Imports your old reviews, with a preview first You keep the reviews you already have
Exports everything at any time You can leave without losing them
Adds review structured data in the page’s HTML Your product pages can be eligible for stars in Google
Adds its widgets as app blocks No theme code to edit when you add or change apps
Syncs with the Shop app, if that matters to you Only Shopify’s listed partner apps do
Explains how its price grows Some apps price by order volume, others by features: pick the one that fits how you expect to grow

How do you add reviews with an app?

To add reviews with an app, install a review app from the Shopify App Store, add its review block to your product page in the theme editor, switch on its app embed if it has one, then import your old reviews or start asking customers.

Here is how that goes with Avis Product Reviews, which we build, on its Free plan:

  1. Install Avis Product Reviews from the Shopify App Store. It opens on Welcome to Avis: click Start setup.
  2. Add reviews: click Add Avis Reviews block. The theme editor opens with the Avis Reviews block on your product page; click Save and come back.
  3. Turn on app embed: click Open theme editor, where Avis is already on under App embeds, and click Save. The embed adds review structured data to your product pages and runs the pop-up, side tab and floating badge.
  4. Pick a style: choose a look beside a live preview.
  5. Get reviews: leave Send review requests automatically on, choose When to send, and answer Do you have reviews in another app?
  6. Choose a plan: click Start with Free.

Setup takes about three minutes, and you can skip any step. Avis needs a paid Shopify plan: it refuses development stores, because it checks reviews against real orders. Its blocks need an Online Store 2.0 theme.

What the Free plan covers: unlimited reviews, photos and videos, questions and answers, review widgets for product pages and the rest of your store, imports from other review apps, exports at any time, and up to 300 review request emails a month, with reminders not counted. Growth and Pro add things like AI summaries, rewards for reviews and more email timing options (compare Avis plans).

Avis shows Verified purchase only when it matches a review to one of your orders: the order behind a review request, or one from the last 60 days with the reviewer’s email. It labels reviews written after an offer Incentivized review, and never hides a review because of its rating. It doesn’t sync with the Shop app: Avis isn’t one of Shopify’s partner apps. The full walk-through is in set up Avis Product Reviews.

Tip: Avis Product Reviews, which collects and imports Shopify reviews, starts on a Free plan with unlimited reviews, photos and videos.

How do you get your first reviews?

Your first reviews come from asking: email each customer once their order has had time to arrive, follow up once or twice, and bring across any reviews you already have from another app.

  • Ask after the order. In Avis, review request emails go out a set number of days after an order is fulfilled, 14 by default, followed by two reminders by default that list only the products not yet reviewed. Growth and Pro can count from delivery instead. By default, each email has stars to click that open the review form (Avis review request emails).
  • Ask recent customers by hand. Request a review sends one for an order you choose, and Ask past customers covers fulfilled orders from the last 60 days.
  • Bring your old reviews. Export them from your previous app and import reviews into Avis, with a preview before anything is saved.
  • Let Shop ask too. Shop asks its own buyers after delivery, but those reviews stay in the Shop app unless a partner app shows them on your store.

Give customers time to use the product before you ask; Avis’s default of 14 days after fulfilment is a starting point to adjust for what you sell.

How do review stars get into Google?

Review stars get into Google through review structured data on your product pages, which your review app adds, and Google then decides whether to show them. Star ratings on Google’s Shopping ads need a separate programme, Google’s Product Ratings, and at least 50 product reviews across your store.

Google’s review-snippet guidelines want the reviews you mark up to be visible on the page, and say: “Don’t aggregate reviews or ratings from other websites” (Google: review snippets, last updated 8 September 2026). They set no minimum number of reviews. Why stars still go missing, and how to read what Search Console reports, is covered in why stars don’t show in Google.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add reviews without an app?

No, not reviews from your customers: Shopify has no review form for the online store. Without an app you can only type quotes into a text or testimonials section of your theme, which collects nothing and adds no rating.

Will Shop app reviews show on my store?

Shop app reviews show on your store only through one of the partner review apps Shopify lists, with a Verified by Shop badge. Avis isn’t one of those apps and doesn’t sync with the Shop app.

What about reviews from Amazon or Etsy?

Some review apps bring in marketplace reviews; Avis has no marketplace import, and its import screen says why: “Avis does not import reviews from AliExpress, Amazon or other marketplaces. Those reviews are about other sellers’ products.” Another app’s export can still contain reviews that app copied from a marketplace: Avis imports them like any other review, so once published they count in your star rating, and its import preview warns about them when it can tell. Google’s review-snippet guidelines tell sites not to aggregate reviews or ratings from other websites, so remove those reviews before you import: what to do with marketplace reviews in an import.

Avis Product Reviews App

Avis Product Reviews is a Shopify app that collects photo and video reviews after each order and imports your reviews from another review app, with the photos its file links to. Labels tell shoppers which reviews were matched to an order, rewarded or added by the store, and Avis never hides a review because of its rating.
