Shopify Bot Traffic Report: October 2026
Where is Shopify bot traffic coming from in October 2026?
Between 9 September and 8 October 2026, X Shield blocked 2,093,496 visits on 339 Shopify stores. Country rules accounted for 62.7% of the blocks and bot detection for 19.1%. Behind the countries, a few networks did most of the work: Alibaba’s cloud made 84.7% of the visits blocked from Singapore, on 72 stores, and one hosting network, FiberPower LLC, made 83.3% of those from France, though on only a handful of stores.
The sample: 2,093,496 visits blocked on 339 Shopify stores running X Shield, which we build, from 9 September to 8 October 2026, both days included (UTC). A store is counted if it blocked at least one visit.
- A visit is one page load that X Shield blocked, not a Shopify session.
- It counts what merchants’ own rules blocked. It is not an estimate of the total bot traffic on Shopify, and bots that never run JavaScript are not in it.
- Source: X Shield’s analytics, aggregated across stores.
- Data: blocked visits by country, October 2026 (CSV).
Read the country totals with care. A country’s total says as much about how many merchants chose to block it as about bots, so this report doesn’t rank countries. The mix of block types and the networks behind each country’s blocks describe the traffic itself, and they fall into two patterns:
- A few networks, mostly hosting and cloud. In Singapore, France and Germany, one to three networks made most of the blocks, and in the United States one hosting network made more than a third.
- Consumer internet providers, blocked by country. In Brazil, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Argentina, Vietnam, Mexico, South Africa, Venezuela and Chile, country rules made 89.7% to 98.1% of the blocks, and the top networks are national providers such as Claro, Reliance Jio and VNPT. That is merchants turning away places they chose not to serve: a country rule decides first, so X Shield never judged whether those visitors were people or bots.
How much is bots, VPNs or blocked countries?
Of the 2,093,496 visits X Shield blocked on Shopify stores from 9 September to 8 October 2026, country rules made 62.7%, bot detection 19.1%, spy extensions 7.70%, VPN and proxy detection 5.30% and developer tools 4.42%. Scraper-network blocking made 0.804%, and IP rules less than 0.01%.
| Blocked by | Blocked visits | Stores | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Country and city rules (GEO control) | 1,312,988 | 242 | 62.7% |
| Bot protection | 398,861 | 229 | 19.1% |
| Spy extensions protection | 161,240 | 76 | 7.70% |
| VPN/Proxy protection | 110,990 | 88 | 5.30% |
| Developer tools protection | 92,494 | 113 | 4.42% |
| Scraper network blocking | 16,822 | 54 | 0.804% |
| IP and network rules (IP & Network) | 101 | 7 | less than 0.01% |
| All blocks | 2,093,496 | 339 | 100% |
“Stores” counts the stores that blocked at least one visit that way; most use several protections, so the column doesn’t add up to 339.
Each blocked page load counts once, under the first rule that matched, and X Shield checks country rules first. So a scraper on a cloud network, visiting a store that blocks the country it appears to come from, counts as a country-rule block, which is why scraper-network blocking looks small here.
“Bot detection” means X Shield’s Bot protection, not Shopify’s human-or-bot classification: crawlers that fail verification against their published IP ranges or network, and automated browsers that give themselves away.
Country, IP, VPN, scraper-network and bot rules made 87.9% of all these blocks. X Shield holds Shopify’s analytics until those rules decide, so a visitor they block leaves no session in Shopify Analytics, which we tested with a country rule on 8 October 2026. Spy-extension and developer-tools blocks, the other 12.1%, are detected after the page loads and can still be counted.
Which networks sit behind each country?
Within a country, X Shield’s blocks often come from one or two networks. Where those are hosting or cloud networks, as in Singapore, France and Germany, a network rule stops them without turning away the country’s shoppers; where they are consumer internet providers, as in Brazil or India, the blocks are a decision about where you sell.
Countries are listed alphabetically, not ranked. “Stores” is how many stores blocked at least one visit from that country; “Country rules” and “Network’s share” are shares of that country’s blocked visits. Network names are as registered to each ASN.
| Country | Blocked visits | Stores | Country rules | Top network (ASN) | Network’s share | Network or country? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Argentina | 42,298 | 73 | 94.9% | Telecom Argentina S.A. (AS7303) | 18.6% | Country: consumer providers |

| Germany | 21,185 | 252 | 11.1% | UAB code200 (AS203061) | 23.1% | Network: VPN and hosting exits |
| India | 93,541 | 160 | 89.7% | Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (AS55836) | 33.7% | Country: consumer providers |
| Mexico | 30,959 | 80 | 97.0% | Uninet S.A. de C.V. (AS8151) | 35.0% | Country: consumer providers |
| Pakistan | 57,232 | 77 | 96.2% | Cyber Internet Services (Pvt) Ltd. (AS9541) | 23.7% | Country: consumer providers |
| Singapore | 352,296 | 191 | 92.6% | Alibaba (US) Technology Co., Ltd. (AS45102) | 84.7% | Network: a cloud host |
| South Africa | 28,988 | 70 | 94.1% | Dimension Data (AS20011) | 12.3% | Country: consumer providers |
| United States | 658,689 | 281 | 34.8% | FiberPower LLC (AS214483) | 36.4% | Network and bot rules, not the country |
| Venezuela | 27,153 | 46 | 98.1% | Corporación Telemic C.A. (AS21826) | 16.0% | Country: consumer providers |
| Vietnam | 34,069 | 75 | 96.4% | VNPT Corp (AS45899) | 63.1% | Country: national providers |
United States: bots and one scraping host
Bot detection made 49.2% of the 658,689 visits X Shield blocked from the United States, on 281 stores. FiberPower LLC (AS214483) made 36.4% of them, and 83.3% of France’s, but those blocks were concentrated: FiberPower’s country-rule blocks fell on only 27 stores and its bot blocks on 11. Its bot blocks were automated browsers. That is heavy scraping aimed at a few stores.
Singapore and France: one network each
Alibaba (US) Technology Co., Ltd. (AS45102), Alibaba’s cloud network, made 84.7% of the 352,296 visits X Shield blocked from Singapore, and Zenlayer Inc (AS62610) 10.9%. Alibaba’s blocks were country-rule blocks on 72 of the 191 stores that blocked a Singapore visit. In France, FiberPower LLC made 83.3% of 161,603 blocks on 172 stores. All three networks are on the list X Shield’s Scraper network blocking turns away, which stops them without a country rule.
Germany: mostly VPN and hosting exits
X Shield blocked visits from Germany on 252 stores, but only 21,185 in all, and country rules made just 11.1% of them. VPN and proxy detection made 60.9%, bot detection 15.7% and scraper networks 5.13%. The top networks were UAB code200 (AS203061), a proxy provider, at 23.1%, the hosting company Hetzner Online GmbH (AS24940) at 22.3% and web2objects GmbH (AS204646) at 18.3%. So most of what X Shield blocked from Germany was caught by VPN and scraper-network protection rather than by country rules, which made only 11.1%. VPN blocking still turns away some real customers on VPNs; scraper-network blocking is the narrower switch.
China: country rules and bot detection
Country rules made 68.1% of the 78,302 visits X Shield blocked from China, on 235 stores, and bot detection 29.0%. The top networks were two consumer carriers, China Unicom (AS4837) at 37.6% and China Mobile (AS56046) at 17.4%, then a data-centre network, CHINANET Nanjing Jishan IDC (AS134756), at 15.3%. If you don’t sell in China, a country rule is the plain choice; if you do, Bot protection and Scraper network blocking go after the automated part without one.
What changed since last month?
This October 2026 report is the first edition, so there is no earlier month to compare it with. Each later edition, published at this address, compares the block mix and each country’s networks with the month before, using the same query.
One change inside this period matters when comparing months:
- From 21 to 23 September 2026, Shopify rolled out a change that filters the sessions it identifies as bots out of its session reports by default (Shopify: session measurement update, checked 9 October 2026; more in what changed in Shopify Analytics). That changes Shopify’s reports, not these counts, which come from X Shield’s own script.
What should a merchant do?
To see first how much of your own traffic Shopify counts as bots, by country and landing page, run the free Shopify bot traffic checker on an export from your Shopify admin.
Decide by network before country. Traffic from hosting, cloud or proxy networks can be blocked by network, keeping the country’s shoppers; traffic from consumer providers in places you don’t sell to calls for a country rule. Either way, test a rule before you enforce it.
- Block countries only where you don’t sell. If you sell to a few countries, allow only those: how to block countries on Shopify.
- Go after bots and data-centre networks. Turn on Bot protection and Scraper network blocking. Googlebot and the other crawlers you allow are checked against their published IP ranges and let in. More in how to tell bots from buyers and block Shopify bot traffic.
- Weigh VPN blocking before you switch it on. VPN/Proxy protection made 60.9% of Germany’s blocks without a country rule, but it also turns away real customers who use a VPN: read whether to block VPN traffic on Shopify first, and watch any new rule in Safety & testing → Dry run before you choose Block for real.
Visitors X Shield blocks with country, IP, VPN, scraper-network or bot rules also stay out of your Shopify reports; what still gets counted in Shopify Analytics lists the exceptions. X Shield runs as JavaScript in the visitor’s browser, so bots that never run it, and Shopify’s checkout, are out of its reach.
Methodology and limits
This report counts page loads that X Shield blocked on Shopify stores from 9 September to 8 October 2026 (UTC), as its script in each visitor’s browser reported them to X Shield’s production analytics. It measures what merchants’ own rules blocked, not how much bot traffic Shopify stores receive.
- Visits are page loads, not sessions. Each blocked page load is one event, so a visitor who reloads a blocked page counts again. Shopify’s sessions are a different unit, and these numbers won’t match them.
- Merchants chose the rules. Every X Shield protection is off until the merchant switches it on, and a country rule blocks a country only where a merchant listed it or allowed only other countries. Totals reflect those choices, so countries are not ranked.
- One rule per page load. A blocked page load counts under the first rule that matched, in X Shield’s order: country and city rules, IP and network rules, scraper networks, VPN and proxy, bots, developer tools, spy extensions.
- Only what runs JavaScript. Bots that never run JavaScript, such as curl, python-requests, Scrapy, most AI crawlers and anything reading
/products.json, never meet X Shield and aren’t counted. Neither is Shopify’s checkout. - Locations can be wrong. Country and network come from IP geolocation and ASN data. Network names are as registered to each ASN, such as “Alibaba (US) Technology Co., Ltd.” for Alibaba’s cloud.
- Not counted: visits while a store is in dry run, crawlers and addresses a merchant allows under Global bypass, and stores that blocked nothing in the period.
- Which countries: the 15 with the most blocked visits among countries seen on at least 20 stores, 1.84 million of the 2.09 million blocked visits, so no row describes a handful of shops.
- Network details in the text, such as how many stores a network’s blocks fell on, come from a follow-up query on the same data.
- Aggregates only. No IP address, user agent, customer or store identifier left X Shield’s analytics warehouse for this report.
- Rounding. Shares are to three significant figures where the data allows; the CSV gives them as fractions between 0 and 1.
The figures were computed on 9 October 2026.
