AI in Avis: Summaries, Topics and Reply Drafts

What does AI do in Avis?

AI in Avis Product Reviews summarises, highlights, sorts by topic and translates what your reviewers wrote, describes their photos, and drafts replies and FAQs for you to check. It never writes reviews. The storefront features are on by default, under Settings → General → AI on your store, and every AI feature is free, within 200 AI tasks a day.

Feature Starts when What shoppers see
Review summary A product has 5 reviews; rewritten when the number of reviews changes by a fifth, or after 30 days A Review summary with pros and cons above the reviews, labelled “Summarized by AI”
Highlights A 4–5 star review is read The review’s most useful sentence marked, in the reviewer’s own words
Topic filters A product has 10 reviews and AI has read most of them Buttons such as “Size”: a shopper taps one to read only those reviews, at every rating
Review stories A product has 8 reviews, and the Avis Review Stories block is on the page A swipeable story of reviewers’ quotes
Translate reviews A shopper clicks Translate on a review in another language The translation, with “Translated from” the original language and Show original
Photo alt text New review photos A description in the photo’s alt text, for screen readers
Draft with AI (reply drafts) You ask, on a review Nothing, unless you post the draft as your reply
Draft FAQs from reviews You ask; a product needs 3 reviews After you publish them, questions and answers shown as From the store

Reply drafts come in three tones, Friendly, Formal and Brief, and are never posted by themselves. Smart sort, the “Most useful” order, isn’t AI: “It uses a fixed formula, not AI”, so it uses no AI tasks.

Does AI ever write or hide reviews?

No. Avis’s AI never writes a review, never changes what a reviewer wrote and never decides whether a review is published: “AI only summarizes, highlights or translates what reviewers wrote, and describes their photos. It never writes reviews, and its flags never hide a review.”

  • AI flags are advice. With content checks on, Avis holds reviews that contain links, contact details or bad language, and AI can add a flag when a review may be abusive or contain personal information. AI’s flags never change a review’s status by themselves: you decide.
  • Tone stays in the admin. Avis sorts what customers mention into topics, with the tone of each, to help you read your reviews. The topics can become the topic filters shoppers use; shoppers never see the tone, and neither decides what is published.
  • Labels. The summary shows “Summarized by AI”, and a translation shows where it came from. A drafted FAQ you publish shows as your store’s answer, and a reply draft you post is your reply.

How publishing and hiding work: moderation in Avis.

What is sent to the AI models?

Avis sends a review’s text, title and rating, and the product’s title, to the AI models; never the reviewer’s name, email address, order or customer ID. Email addresses and phone numbers that a reviewer typed into the text are masked before anything is sent.

  • Alt text also sends the photo, reduced in size.
  • Translation also sends your store’s reply to that review, so it can be translated too.
  • FAQ drafts also send the questions already asked about the product, masked the same way, so the drafts don’t repeat them.
  • Most of the models run on Cloudflare’s infrastructure (Workers AI). The review summary, topic filters, review stories and the matching of an unrecognised import file’s columns use Google’s Gemini model, “through Google’s paid Gemini API, under terms that do not let Google use the data to improve its products”, as Avis’s privacy policy puts it; if it’s unavailable, a Workers AI model does the work instead.

How many AI tasks can Avis run each day?

Avis can run up to 200 AI tasks a day for your store, shared by every AI feature. Each request to an AI model counts, a retry included, and the count resets at midnight UTC. When the day’s tasks are used up, AI features pause until the next day: your store keeps showing reviews, and nothing breaks.

  • Summaries, highlights, topics and alt text are worked out in the background and then reused, so most shoppers’ visits use no AI tasks.
  • Translations run when a shopper asks for one, and can use at most half of the day’s tasks, so a busy day of translations never stops the summaries.
  • Matching the columns of an unrecognised import file counts toward the same 200.

Avis’s limits as a whole: Avis’s free plan and limits.

Avis Product Reviews App

Avis Product Reviews is a Shopify app that collects photo and video reviews after each order and imports your reviews from another review app, with the photos its file links to. Labels tell shoppers which reviews were matched to an order, rewarded or added by the store, and Avis never hides a review because of its rating.
