Give Discount Codes for Reviews in Avis
Can I reward customers for reviews?
Yes. Avis Product Reviews can give reviewers a discount code for their next order, for writing a review or for adding a photo or video, never for the rating. Set it up in Collect → Incentives, under Discount for reviews. Every review written while the offer is shown is labelled Incentivized review.
Rewards are free in Avis. “Rewards the review, never the rating”: “Reviewers earn a code for writing a review, or for adding a photo or video. The rating does not matter.”
How do I set up a reward?
To set up a reward in Avis, open Collect → Incentives, turn on Offer a discount for reviews, write the Disclosure shown to shoppers, choose the code type, value and which reviews earn it, and save. “Avis cannot save the offer without” the disclosure.
- In Avis, open Collect → Incentives.
- Turn on Offer a discount for reviews.
- Write the Disclosure shown to shoppers: “Say clearly what reviewers get and what they must do.” Avis shows it in the review form and in review requests.
- Under Code type, choose A one-time code for each review (recommended) or The same code for everyone.
- Choose the Discount type, Percentage or a fixed amount, and its Value.
- Choose Which reviews earn it and Where to offer it, then save.
| Code type | How it works |
|---|---|
| A one-time code for each review (recommended) | Avis makes a new code in Shopify for each review that earns one, like AV-XXXX-XXXX. It works only once |
| The same code for everyone | You create the code in Shopify under Discounts and set its limits; Avis gives it to reviewers |
Under Code settings, a one-time code can expire (Expires after, 60 days by default; 0 means never), need a Minimum purchase amount, apply to one collection, combine with other discounts, and be locked with Only the reviewer can use it when Avis knows the reviewer’s customer account. Remind reviewers before their code expires emails a one-time code’s reviewer up to 14 days before it runs out, or 7 days after it was issued if it never expires; a code that lasts less than 3 days gets no reminder.
Who earns a code?
A reviewer earns a code for a review written while your offer is shown: any such review, or only one with a photo or video, depending on Which reviews earn it. The rating never matters, so a one-star review with a photo earns the same code as a five-star one.
| Which reviews earn it | Who gets a code |
|---|---|
| Every review | Any review written while the offer is shown, with or without a photo |
| Reviews with a photo or video (recommended) | Only reviews with a photo or video |
- Give a different value for video reviews sets a higher value for a video, with one-time codes.
- Where to offer it: Only in review requests, or In review requests and in the review form on your store. With Only in review requests, a review written on your product page earns nothing.
- “The transactional review request has no offer, so reviews written from it are not incentivized.” With the default Marketing consent setting, customers who didn’t accept marketing emails get that version.
- Store reviews, the rating of your store as a whole, never earn a code.
Why are rewarded reviews labelled?
Avis labels every review written while your offer is shown, and every review that earned a code, Incentivized review, so shoppers know a reward was offered: “You cannot remove this label.” If a review was marked by mistake, untick Incentivized review under Labels on that review’s page; Avis asks for a reason and logs it.
The FTC’s Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule: Questions and Answers (November 2024, checked 27 October 2026) explains how US rules treat rewards for reviews; it says “The rule does not prohibit giving incentives for reviews” as long as the reward doesn’t depend on what the review says. Read it, or your own country’s rules, before you offer one.
