Show Avis Reviews in Your Shoppers' Languages
Which languages does Avis support?
Avis Product Reviews shows its review widgets, the review form, the “How reviews work” statement and its emails in 39 languages: English and 38 others. The 38 are machine-translated and still waiting for review by native speakers. They are free and on by default, under Show built-in translations to shoppers in Widgets → Copy.
The 38 are Arabic, Bulgarian, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Filipino, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Malay, Norwegian Bokmål, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil and Portugal), Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian and Vietnamese. Persian and Urdu aren’t among them.
- Because the translations are machine-made, read the text in your main markets on Widgets → Copy, and replace anything that reads oddly with your own.
- The Avis admin follows your Shopify admin’s language, in 21 languages, also machine-translated.
How does Avis choose a shopper’s language?
Avis shows each shopper the language your Shopify storefront is showing them, as Shopify reports it, not their browser’s setting. If Avis has no text for that exact variant, it uses the closest one, such as French for Canadian French; with no match, the shopper sees your main language.
- With Show built-in translations to shoppers off, every shopper sees your own widget and form text, in English by default; the “How reviews work” statement and the emails still follow each shopper’s language.
- If a language’s text takes more than 2.5 seconds to load, the widget shows your main-language text rather than make the shopper wait.
- Emails follow the language of the customer’s order. Avis sends your own version of an email in that language if you wrote one; otherwise the built-in translation, as long as you haven’t edited that email; otherwise your default email.
Can I write my own text for each language?
Yes. On Widgets → Copy, choose a language with Add a language and write your own text, or click Copy built-in translation to start from the machine translation and edit it. “Leave a box empty to use the built-in translation shown in it.” Your own text for a language comes first.
- In Avis, open Widgets → Copy.
- Click Add a language and enter the language, such as “tr” or “pt-br”.
- Click Copy built-in translation, or type your own text in the boxes you want to change. The preview shows the result.
- Save. Shoppers who use that language now see your text.
For review request emails, open Collect → Emails, choose the email and Translate this email into a language under Language to add. Customers whose order is in a language you haven’t written get the built-in translation if you haven’t edited that email, otherwise your default email: “Default: all other languages”.
Can shoppers translate reviews?
Yes, with Translate reviews on, in Settings → General → AI on your store. It “Adds a “Translate” link to reviews in a language different from the shopper’s”. A shopper who clicks it reads the review in their language, marked “Translated from” the original language, with Show original to switch back.
- Reviews are always kept and shown as the reviewer wrote them; a translation is shown only to the shopper who asked for it.
- Translations are made by AI and count toward Avis’s 200 AI tasks a day: AI features in Avis.
